“…“Gianna?”

Said cooling heart stuttered to a halt before picking up the pace and galloping hard and fast against her ribs. Her eyes closed tight for a moment as she strove to pull a mantle of indifference over herself before turning to face Gideon. The moment she locked gazes with him, however, her charade crumbled and she felt her soul twist painfully. He stood, just inside her bedroom door, his pack at his feet and his sword belted at his waist. He wore cleaned and repaired clothing, and it was obvious he was ready to depart for his own realm. The sight caused her knees to buckle slightly and she fought an almost desperate need to beg him not to leave her. There was an urge to launch herself into his arms and hold on for all she was worth, and it took an astonishing amount of self-discipline on her part to resist that urge.

She took hold of her riotous emotions, and willed away the tears that threatened to fill her eyes; she would not beg nor would she show any weakness. A warrior of Gideon’s strength and prowess would not tolerate a show of weakness; such a display would earn nothing more than his cold disdain. She could do without his derision and scorn; she wasn’t sure her heart could stand another such blow. So she imagined ice filling her, taking over, creeping quickly over her heart and infusing her soul; she had promised him no strings, no traps, and she would live up to that promise. The fact that she herself had ended up ensnared, though painful, didn’t matter.

Gideon watched the play of emotions across Gianna’s pale, drawn face, and knew how vulnerable she was at this moment, though she was doing everything in her power to appear anything but. She was more pale than normal, and bruised shadows had formed under her red and swollen eyes. He frowned, wondering how long she’d cried, but more importantly, why had she cried. Because of him? Because they would soon part?

“Why?”

The word barked out of him, rougher than he intended, and she flinched as if struck. Taking a deep breath, he willed himself to relax and soften. “Why have you been crying, Gianna?”

This time, his tone was gentle, yet firm enough to brook no argument or prevarication. He watched her pointed little chin jerk up haughtily and he gave a low warning growl. “Don’t push me, Gianna,” he cautioned, forestalling any lies or protest she might voice, “Tell me why you’re hurting.”

He absently rubbed his chest, over his heart; odd, but he knew she was hurting, could feel the sharp ache that resided deep inside her. It was so keen, so poignant that it took his breath. “Please, G,” he said quietly, “I don’t want you to be hurt when I leave.”

Gianna’s chin shook as if she were fighting tears, and she swallowed hard. “It’s going to happen, regardless,” she managed to say, her voice thick with emotion, “I promised you nothing but memories, but I’ve realized that memories aren’t going to be enough to sustain me.”

Gideon opened his mouth to reply, to tell her he felt the same, but she whirled around suddenly, and buried her face in her hands, as if embarrassed by her admission. The sight of her, looking so fragile and vulnerable kicked Gideon in the gut, and without conscious thought, he crossed the distance between them to wrap his arms around her. He held her close, lending his strength and warmth, and when she turned in his arms to bury her face against his chest, he felt his heart constrict. She cried in near silence, her tears scalding him as surely as boiling water.

“Please Gianna,” he begged quietly, “Please try to understand. My world is no place for a woman. It’s too dangerous; if I brought you with me, as I would like, then I would be putting your life at risk, and that’s something I refuse to do.”

Gianna went still, her ears pricking as she listened hard to Gideon’s confession. Had she heard correctly? Did he wish they could remain together? The mere thought left her sinking heart hopefully buoyant, and she held herself still as she waited with breath held for Gideon to continue speaking.

“I feel something for you Gianna,” he continued, his arms tightening around her, “But what I feel isn’t enough to justify risking your life or anyone else’s.”

Drying her tears, Gianna took a step back and gazed up at Gideon, determination lighting her lavender eyes. “I am a grown woman, Gideon,” she told him, a little more steel in her tone than was truly needed, “And I am responsible for my own life and my own actions.” With those cryptic words, she turned and walked out of her room, leaving Gideon staring in perplexed silence after her, wondering why it was that his gut had begun to knot and he had a sudden sense of foreboding…”
