DevilsPlaygroundFormer U.S. Attorney, Meredith Walsh, took some time off to raise her children. But the time took away everything she once trusted about herself. She’s lost within the mundane confines of her children’s schedules of lacrosse, soccer, Cub Scouts, and math facts. Desperate for a sliver of her former passion, and isolated in the small town her corporate husband relocated her to, she counsels herself on risking her family for the rush of a fling.

But Vincent Pratt, the local chief of police, weakens Meredith’s abhorrence of affairs and her dedication to her family. With him, she finds a new version of herself, one capable of contributing in her new world, and thriving in her lonely home. In spite of the fact, she’s not the kind of woman who has an affair.

Meredith was the perfect U.S. Attorney and married the perfect, goal focused husband, Brad. They were both career driven. Then life changed. Two kids later and Meredith is a stay home mother in a beautiful house in a small town. But she’s bored with her life. She misses the challenges of work. Her husband is a self-centered workaholic that ignores her and wants a perfect family. Then she meets Vincent, the Chief of Police on a school field trip. He’s stunning and funny and married also. Tempted to have an affair because she’s so lonely and miserable, will Meredith find happiness in her marriage or outside with the handsome officer? Will they be able to keep this secret from exploding all over the place?

“The colonel leaned back, and I turned my body toward him and rested the back of my head on the window. I was aware of the angle of my chin and the arch of my back as I pushed my hair behind my ear. My voice was higher and lighter than usual. I recognized it as foreign, but couldn’t help myself. My head tilted when I laughed. I swear I even flipped my hair once. I was an idiot. For this juvenile behavior, I should have hated myself, but I was too busy worshipping him. I couldn’t stop.

Even though I’d known him only for a few hours, I cared about his opinion. I craved his attention, and a silent part of me recognized those weren’t the only things I wanted from him.”

This story was riveting. Meredith is so unhappy and conflicted in her marriage and doesn’t know what to do. She wants to put her children first. She came from a broken home and wants them to have the perfect life. I could feel her loneliness and she struggled to do what she felt was the right thing to do. I don’t know how she could get Brad’s attention and get him to listen to what was bothering her. Perhaps they never belonged together in the first place? Normally, cheating would have bothered me in a book, but the author does an excellent job of showing the reader the circumstances that drive Meredith and Vince toward each other. The ending gave me chills. Literally. Goosebumps and I don’t know how I’ll be able to wait for the next book.

I could not put this book down. Sleep? What is sleep? That’s for puny humans. If cheating is not a trigger for you and you like emotional reads then I high recommend this story. I felt like I was in Meredith shoes every step of the way and I can’t wait to find out what happens next!

About The Author

ElizaEliza Freed graduated from Rutgers University and returned to her hometown in rural South Jersey. Her mother encouraged her to take some time and find herself. After three months of searching, she began to bounce checks and her neighbors began to talk; her mother told her to find a job.

She settled into Corporate America, learning systems and practices and the bureaucracy that slows them. Eliza quickly discovered her creativity and gift for story telling as a corporate trainer and spent years perfecting her presentation skills and studying diversity. It’s during this time she became an avid observer of the characters we meet and the heartaches we endure. Her years of study have taught her laughter is the key to survival, even when it’s completely inappropriate.

She currently lives in New Jersey with her family and a misbehaving beagle named Odin. An avid swimmer, if Eliza is not with her family and friends, she’d rather be underwater. While she enjoys many genres, she has always been a sucker for a love story…the more screwed up the better.

  1. This sounds like a very compelling read and very character driven, too. Meredith sounds like a well developer character, and one that you get to see what would drive someone to have an affair. Lovely review, Robin!
