He thought Joy was away pursuing her dreams. She thought Dawson was never coming back. And while their connection might still be there, Joy isn’t Dawson’s anymore, and it would be better—safer—for everyone if he walked away. But walking away isn’t an option for Dawson, not this time.

Joy and Dawson were high school sweethearts. Dawson ends up having to leave town and assumes Joy is going to college and having a better life. When Dawson and his friend come back to town three years later, he discovers Joy still in town and something is very different about her. In fact the entire town is different. Soon Dawson doesn’t know if he can leave town without figuring out what’s happened to Joy.

“‘But nothing. You left and I had to move on with my life.’ Her voice cracked as she bowed her head. When I heard her harsh breath, I rushed forward and gathered her into my arms, hating seeing her upset.

‘I’m sorry,’ I mumbled into her hair, and she froze in my arms before struggling against my grip, frantic to get away. But I held on, unable to let her go. Never had she reacted to me like this, like a wild animal, caught and desperate to escape. Even her eyes had a manic, panicked look in them. Something was very wrong here.

‘Everything’s changed, Dawson. I’ve changed. I’m not the same naïve girl that you left behind.’ She stopped struggling, her chest heaved and her eyes that once were so full of life now looked dead. Defeated. ‘Do yourself a favor and leave before it changes you too.’”

This story was confusing at first because you don’t know what came about to bring Joy to these circumstances or why Dawson left town. The book got pretty dark and gritty at times when you figure out just how far Joy has fallen. Many parts were disturbing where I wanted to throw my kindle, but overall I enjoyed the story and found Maverick Defense to be intriguing. I still don’t know quite what they do but I want to.

I definitely will read more books in this series because I’m curious about Lex, Mike and Ari. The characters are engaging enough that I need to know what happens next. Hopefully we get to see Dawson and Lex take on some more intense situations.
