I will start this review by saying that I LOVE Pepper Winters and all her previous books so I was really excited to get my hands on Unseen Messages. While I know I can not put spoilers in this review I will give you my best description.
If there is one thing I dislike, I mean abhor, it is inner monologue. Despise it. And unfortunately, this book was chock full of it. I found myself skimming pages at a time finding out when I finally stopped I hadn’t missed much. This made me sad!
Estelle Evermore is in a great place in her life…she has found her true calling in her music and is on the rise to being a huge star. While traveling home she finds herself attracted to another passenger in the airport…enter – Galloway Oak. Their eyes meet and boom! Electricity. Galloway is on his way to a remote island to do some humanitarian work for a few months.
As luck would have it through a series of “unseen messages”. These two somehow find themselves in the middle of a storm, on a unsafe helicopter with a family of four to the island Galloway is supposed to do work at and the family is vacationing at and Estelle…well she was just going for the heck of it…as a last minute decision she decides to hop on this helicopter and take a vacation.
Naturally the “unseen messages” are dark and ominous. Should she really be doing this? Well….of course not.
What happens next is everyone’s worst nightmare, well at least one of mine. Besides having to deal with the horrible situation landing at their feet, Estelle and Galloway are drawn to each other and are finding it hard to fight their feelings. A huge and I mean huge portion of the book is them dealing with the situation they find themselves in (which goes on for years). It definitely had some angst at times and the storyline was very interesting…i know this makes no sense but once you read the book, you will understand. For me, it could have been cut in half and you still would have had the same outcome. I must admit, I found myself stopping and doing other things (which I never do during her books). Until I got about 3/4 of the way in and then it finally picked up. Thank god!! And once it did I really enjoyed it.
There is love, there is angst among heartache, loss, happiness, survival, sadness….just a lot of everything. I will say that even though I thought there was way too much inner monologue and the book could have been shorter, I was happy with the ending and may have shed more then a tear or two. While it wasn’t my most favorite from this author, it held my attention for the most part and I was definitely curious to see how it all played out.
