I have a killer book hangover and the culprit is Whiskey. I absolutely loved this book, even when I hated it to the point of wanting to chuck my kindle across the room, I still loved it. This is my first read from Kandi Steiner and most certainly not my last. Her writing is fantastic and beautiful and oh what an emotional, crazy, angst filled journey she took us on.
Brecks or B as she likes to be called and Jamie were best friends that had this crazy intense emotional connection. Yes there was also sparks flying everywhere for these two from the moment they literally collided into each other. The only problem being he fell for her other best friend first.
“ I didn’t even have time to call dibs, I couldn’t even think the word, let alone say it, before it was too late. I watched it, in slow motion as Whiskey fell for my best friend before I even had the chance to say a single word to him.”
So they stayed friends and their relationship though platonic walked a very thin line and they both knew it. It was so hard for B to be around him when he belonged to someone else but Jamie or Whiskey as she called him in her own mind was addictive and no matter how hard she tried she just couldn’t stay away.
“ I’m not sorry I kissed you.” But I’m sorry I did it when you weren’t mine to kiss.”
When High School came to an end so did Jamie’s relationship but he also withdrew from B and though it shattered her she knew it was for the best. But what happens when the boy who stole your heart ends up at the same college as you, and your boyfriend? And when you see each other you both realize neither of you can imagine a life without the other in it. Even if it will always be just as friends. The bond these two have is so strong and intense that they are all tangled up in each other but love can be messy and it can break you. Then just when you think the pieces are starting to fall back together and it will be beautiful it goes and breaks you again. The angst in this book is insane!
“ He kissed me like he was losing me, like that kiss was his last chance to keep me, and I didn’t have the heart to tell him it wasn’t.”
We follow B and Jamie through high school, college and some years after. There are so many ups and downs and downs as they try to navigate through this sometimes crazy thing called life and figure out where they belong in each other worlds. There’s distance and there are weddings and funerals, as well as a whole lot of pain and heartache. It’s not an easy road by any means but there’s a beautiful overwhelming sense of love between two people who so desperately want their happily ever after.
“Even if you must move on, please don’t ever let us go.”
I loved, loved, loved this book. It completely consumed me with it’s amazing and intense characters. The writing was beautiful as was the story. At times infuriating but beautiful none the less. One of the best books I have read in a long time and totally worth the killer book hangover.
Kandi Steiner is a Creative Writing and Advertising/Public Relations graduate from the University of Central Florida living in Tampa with her husband. Kandi works full time as a social media specialist, but also works part time as a Zumba fitness instructor and blackjack dealer.
Kandi started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic (like most girls brought up on Disney movies).
When Kandi isn’t working or writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys beach days, movie marathons, live music, craft beer and sweet wine – not necessarily in that order.
