For Aubry Clark, being in the wrong place at the wrong time has taken a dangerous turn. Things had been look looking up with a flirty friendship with Mike Chesterfield and her design business taking off. But during a photo shoot at the docks she witnesses a girl being shoved in a shipping container and someone grabs her. It looks like Aubry’s luck has finally run out.
“She’s awake. My heart pounds against my ribs. The things I told her. My secrets – exposed. Fuck. She can’t talk. I push those thoughts from my head. She’s awake.”
I really thought this book had everything I love about dark reads. A captive heroine. Really sadistic bad guys. A hero that is going to save her. And that’s where this kind of sat outside my comfort zone. Overall, the story was ok but I had issues with both Aubry and Mike. Aubry never seemed to behave in an intelligent way. She knows her life is in danger yet she questions constantly why she can’t just go back to life as normal. And she realizes that Mike is sketchy YET she continues to lust after him. Meanwhile, Mike is selfish and doesn’t really put Aubry’s safety and well-being above his own questionable deeds coming to light. I just had a hard time really rooting for either one of these characters. I loved the concept of the story. I just didn’t love the flawed characters. I wanted them to both be more redeemable.
But that’s just the way I read the story. You may love this type of book. I probably am more the dark story with the happily ever after with the redeemable assassin type of girl. I don’t know. But if you want to, give it a try and see what you think.
