I never learn my lesson.

And I always want what I can’t have.

When Sarah Henderson walks into my life, I tell myself she’s off limits. She’s my student, sixteen years younger than me, and my boss’s niece. It doesn’t matter that I see the same pain reflected in her eyes that I have in my own, or that the dead organ better known as my heart kicks to life when she’s around.

I’ve been here before, and I know how this ends.

It’s been two years since I fell for the last woman I knew I couldn’t have, the one with the ring on her finger that I chose to ignore.

Two years of trying to overcome that heartache when Sarah slides into my life.

Another woman I can’t have. Another woman I can’t stop myself from wanting.

I never learn my lesson, but with a constant reminder of how that last forbidden love burned, I think I’ve finally learned this one.

This time, I won’t chase what’s off limits.

This time, I’m staying away.

And I’ll keep telling myself that until I believe it.

This is the third book in the What He Doesn’t Know series by Kandi Steiner and even though this can technically read as a stand-alone as stated, I feel like if you don’t read the first two books you really will miss out on so much history that is important with some of the characters in this book. Plus I absolutely fell so deeply in love with the first two books in this series and though the Author gave them an ending I had hoped for my heart still ached for Reese and was hoping he would get his chance for his own HEA.

Sarah was on top of the world, doing what she loved. Studying piano at the college of her choice with dreams of one day playing at Carnegie Hall. When someone who she was supposed to be able to trust to help and guide her takes advantage of her in the most horrific way she is left a shell of the happy, vibrant and trusting person she once was.

“I couldn’t find salvation in it that day, and I hadn’t since.”

It’s been two years since Reese had his heart broken by the only woman he has ever loved, a woman who never belonged to him but that he wanted none the less. Trying to move on but afraid to let go until Reese agrees to take on Sarah as a new student. A student who shares his love of music and who he sees is just as broken as he is. A student he starts to feel something for even though he tells himself he shouldn’t.

“This was my curse-hurting anyone who ever dared to love me. Even when I didn’t mean to, I still did. I was better off alone, and I knew that now.”

Reese and Sarah are two beautifully broken souls drowning in the darkness until they start to see a glimpse of light in each other. Can they help each other heal and move on and will Reese finally get his happily ever after? I loved Reese and how he loved with his whole heart. How even though it broke him time and time again he tried to always do what was best for others no matter how much it hurt. Sarah was amazing and strong and even though she was shattered by someone close to her she was determined to heal and make her dreams come true. I loved these two characters and I know I am maybe in the minority here but I just didn’t love them together. I really wanted to, I really did. Although this story was beautifully written as were the previous books I’ve read from this author, sadly I had a hard time feeling the connection between Reese and Sarah and just didn’t love this book as much as I wanted to. I do look forward to reading more from this author soon!

“It was a feeling, a hope that should gave died in both of us long ago, but was reborn the minute we found each other.”

About Kandi

Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a diehard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.
