I don’t know why it’s been so long since I have read one of Colleen Hoover’s books. She has always been one of favorite authors. Any book I have read of hers I’ve almost instantly fallen in love with. But still it seems like far too long since I have opened a book with her name on the cover. To me, this book in many ways was like reconnecting with an old friend. Reminding me of all the reasons I loved her writing so much. I couldn’t possibly have loved this book anymore than I did. This book hurt so badly. It turned me inside out and back again. It shattered my heart and then tenderly picked up the pieces. I laughed. I swooned. I uncontrollably sobbed and I smiled. There was so much emotion within the pages of this story. Colleen Hoover is a master storyteller and this book…this book was everything!

“The nicest thing my Mother has ever done for me is Die.”

Beyah has been dealt a shitty hand so far in life. This girl has been through so much in her nineteen years. She is holding onto a dream that will soon become a reality because of her perseverance. She’ll get to leave her broken down trailer in her shithole town and never look back. Just a few more months and she’ll be so much more than anyone in her home town in thought she’d ever be. But then tragedy strikes and left with literally no choice at all, she is leaving behind Kentucky and headed to Texas.

“Damaged people recognize other damaged people.”

Beyah is staying with her Dad, who she barely knows, and his new wife and daughter for the summer in this beautiful beach house in Texas. This is where she meets their neighbor Samson who her new step-sister Sara is hoping to set her up with. Beyah thinks Samson is someone who he really isn’t and he thinks she is someone she really isn’t too. This sounds a little confusing but it’s not…it’s just me. It may seem like they come from completely different worlds but soon we start to see that they may have more in common than they thought. What starts out as a friendship grows into something so much more but they are both holding on so tightly to secrets that can change everything.

“You think you’re as alone in this world as I am?”

I feel like I can’t say anything more about the actual story without giving anything away. This is definitely one of those times you need to jump in with as little information as possible and let yourself be immersed in this beautiful, amazing and powerful story that Colleen Hoover gives us with Heart Bones. I will say I loved Beyah and Samson so very much. I honestly don’t remember the last time I was this fully invested in two characters. Every single thing about them. They both amazed me. I just can not stop thinking about them. I also love the way the author wrote Sara, Beyah’s step-sister. I feel like all too often the step-sister is an evil witch who is jealous of the new girl but not here. Just the opposite and I loved it. So read this book, you just have too. This book was nothing that I expected and because of that I loved it so much more.

“Don’t worry. Hearts don’t have bones. They can’t actually break.”

Samson’s knee brushes high up on my inner thigh and I’m glad he can’t see anything from my chin down, because my body is covered in chills right now.

“I didn’t think there were many people in the world like me,” he says.

“You think we’re alike?” I want to laugh at that comparison, but there’s not an ounce of humor in his expression.

“I believe we have a lot more in common than you think we do, Beyah.”

“You think you’re as alone in this world as I am?”

He folds his lips together and nods his head, and it’s the most honest thing I’ve ever seen. I never would have thought someone so well off could have a life as shitty as mine, but I can see it in the way he’s looking at me. Everything about him suddenly seems familiar to me.

He’s right. We are alike, but only in the saddest ways.

My voice comes out in a whisper when I say, “When I first met you on that ferry, I could tell you were damaged.”

There’s a flicker of something in his eyes as he tilts his head to the right. “You think I’m damaged?”

“Yes.”

He moves even closer in the water, but there wasn’t much space left between us to begin with. It’s deliberate, and so much of me is touching so much of him now. “You’re right,” he says quietly, slipping a hand around the back of my left knee. “There’s nothing left of me but a fucking pile of debris.” He pulls me to him, wrapping both my legs around him. That’s all he does, though. He doesn’t try to kiss me. He just connects us together as if that’s enough while our arms keep us both afloat.

I’m swiftly succumbing to him. I don’t know in what way. All of them, maybe. Because right now, I need him to do something else. Anything else. Taste me. Touch me. Drag me under.

We watch each other for a moment and it’s almost like looking into a broken mirror. He leans in slowly, but not toward my mouth. He presses his lips against my shoulder, so gentle it feels like a graze.

I close my eyes and inhale.

I’ve never felt anything so sensual. So perfect.
