Emmy has a tortured past. Her sick, sadistic stepbrother Rob took advantage of her in the worst way possible. Multiple times and when she finally had the strength to tell someone, no one believed her. Not even her own mother. Of course, her stepfather threw money at the problem and hired a high powered attorney. That attorney happens to be a family friend. The father of Rob’s best friend Sterling. Not only did Emmy grow up with her stepbrother but also his best friend Sterling. He was added to the list of people that now thought she was a slut and liar out to ruin someone’s life with her stories.
Emmy moves on and away to start over at college. Somewhere where people don’t know what she has been through. Somewhere where people won’t stare, judge and call her names. Things get off to a great start and she finally feels like there is light at the end of the tunnel. Until she finds out that one of her professors has a TA and it’s Sterling. She is horrified and knows this will not turn out good.
Rob alerts Sterling to the fact that his sister is there and enlists him using the “bro code” to help destroy Emmy’s life. Now here’s where things turned for me. I was liking the story up until this point and Sterling doing evil Rob’s bidding. Until he starts to doubt if Rob is actually telling the truth and that Emmy made up the rape accusation. Not only does Sterling start to doubt him, he is starting to have an attraction to Emmy and vice versa. At this point, I was lost.
Emmy is supposedly so devastated by what happened and Sterling is torturing her. She is wrecked. Sterling hates her guts to the point of enjoying torturing her and then WHAM…it’s all hearts and flowers. Sterling wants to prove her innocence and kill his best friend. Pump the brakes here! It literally happened in less then one chapter and the pivoting of these two had me rolling my eyes. It definitely needed a chapter or three more to make this transition more believable. At the speed it happened, the book just didn’t feel like the story flowed where I could lose myself again. But it might be the perfect bully romance for you.
“Waiting for your next victim?” a cool, dark voice asks from my left.
“What do you want?” I ask without turning around. His voice alone sends shivers down my spine. God only knows what seeing his smug smile and sharp jaw would do to me right now.
Stupidly, I let my guard down tonight. Every single fiber of my being is telling me to run, but I refuse—partly because the thought of making a scene in front of all of these people has my skin feeling tight and itchy, and also because I refuse to give him the satisfaction of seeing me run away… again.
Sterling leans in, his breath tickling my neck and his body warming mine. “I’m just saying. Dressed the way you are, you must be looking for a good time. And I can’t help but wonder…” He trails off, skimming his nose down the column of my throat before scraping his teeth against the sensitive flesh where my neck and shoulder meet.
“Stop it!” I pray for my voice to come out firm and commanding, but seeing as God abandoned me long ago, I sound raw and needy. Which is a lie. I am a lot of things in regard to Sterling Abbot—angry, frustrated, hurt—but definitely not needy.
I try to shoulder-check him, but he bands an arm around my waist and pulls me in closer, bringing my back flush with his front. The feel of our bodies pressed together has my heart slamming against my ribs as arousal and disgust battle for dominance inside of me.
Judging from my roiling gut and damp panties, it’s a tie.
“I don’t really think you mean that, little mouse.”
