Smith and Alice sneaked into my heart and stole my New Year. This second chance romance is an angsty roller coaster of emotion but it’s almost low key how it slowly unravels. Both of our main characters are broken but in very different ways. Smith has unending layers. He’s secretive, blunt, anti-social, untrusting and kind of an asshole. Alice was betrayed by her best friend and peer group but also by Smith. For a summer, “wild” Alice is sentenced to co-exist with Smith by her unknowing mother. Alice is a strong, privileged heroine who refuses to let any person dictate how she lives her life. She’s a survivor. And seemed to have unlimited patience in dealing with Smith. Smith…oh my Smith. He wormed his way into my heart while I was grumbling about his many problems. Until the full story unfolds. He sucked me into his crazy grouchiness and I wanted to forcefully hug on him like a feral cat. These complex characters were a pleasure to enjoy with the story twists and secrets that come out in the end. I couldn’t put the book down from page one to the very end.
