A good, quick read. This little novella that is part of the Rochester series. The series does not need to be read to read this, but it is helpful to connect some of the characters mentioned. Marjorie Dunn is an innkeeper in Eben Cape and her past is coming back to haunt her. She has a guest in the inn during off season which has her suspicious, but she can tell he is different. There is something about him that resembles her. Someone who doesn’t have a family or connection to anyone. But they are drawn to each other.

Sam Smith is a CIA agent who was sent to see what Marjorie knows about her father’s death that happened years ago. When he is unable to find any evidence that she knows anything, his orders change. But he can’t do what he is asked to do. He has feelings for Marjorie and now feels like he needs to protect her. The relationship between the two of them happened very quickly. For a woman who knows Sam was up to know good, she put a lot of faith in him which turned out to be in her best interest. It is a sweet, HOT story but too quick for my liking. I want to hear more about the games they like to play.

Excerpt

“Tell me more about you, Marjorie Dunn.”

“I like it here in Eben Cape.” She watches me carefully as she says this. Worried I might reject this idea, maybe. But hell. It’s nice here. It could be a home. “I tried to make a life that my parents would have been proud of. They probably never imagined I’d own an inn, but they’d like it here, I think. They’d think it was peaceful. They’d understand wanting to live in a small town. It’s beautiful, even in the winter. It’s calm. No monsters lurking in the shadows, except…”

“Except?”

Her brow furrows. “No place is perfect. I’ve met some men here who made life difficult. My friend Emily’s husband was one of those. He’s gone now.”

“Because of you?”

She snorts. “No. He got into an argument with her brother, and he was killed. It was the talk of the town last year. Made me nervous to think about people killing each other. I didn’t like that. I was relieved when things quieted down. Relieved for Emily, especially.” Marjorie finds another one of my scars and focuses on it. “Do the scars still bother you?”

“No.” It’s tough to get closer to her, but I manage another inch. “That’s the thing about scars. They grow over with tissue that doesn’t have nerve endings. They don’t feel any pain. They’re basically dead.”

“It is a little like death,” she agrees. “But you’re still alive.”

“The scars will be with me forever. Same with the hidden ones. Those wounds are covered in the same scar tissue. I don’t feel anything.”

That’s what I’ve told myself for years. It’s bullshit. I feel things looking into Marjorie’s eyes. It’s bullshit for her, too. Her wounds are there in her heart. She’s built this inn as a guard for them, and she’s been doing a damn good job.

“I wish I felt less sometimes. You know…” Another thoughtful sigh. “I’ve made a home here, but it’s not the same. Nobody ever stays for long. Maybe that’s just how life is.”

The promise is on my lips. I won’t leave.

But of course I will.

That’s the job.

That’s my life.

It’s not going to happen this minute, though. Not in the next hour. Not even today. Fuck it. I’m staying with her at least for today. I let myself indulge in the fantasy. I normally don’t do that. Imagination can keep you alive through a dark night, but this isn’t about imagination. It’s about being in this moment.

I fold my arms around the beautiful innkeeper in my bed. “Tell me more.”
