Excerpt

The minute Boral leaves Carrick’s condo, Maddox asks, “Feel like blowing off some steam?”

I had thought he meant a workout in the gym, and I was game for that. So I say, “Sure.”

But rather than heading toward the gym, Maddox pivots in the opposite direction and leads me to the southwest side of the condo. It’s an area I don’t go to a lot as it holds a guest suite identical to mine and another guest bedroom.

Maddox opens a door I had thought was a utility closet, and I gasp when I realize it’s a man-cave.

Dark paneled walls and gleaming hardwood floors, but the decor is distinctly different than the cool blues, light creams, and silvery grays throughout the rest of the condo. Persian rugs in crimson, navy, and beige are scattered under various pieces of furniture. There’s a pool table, a bar to seat eight, a poker table, and even a dartboard. One wall boasts a flat-screen TV so large I can’t even begin to fathom how big it is, and it’s sectioned off with a massive U-shaped couch in cocoa brown, distressed leather with ornate carved clawed feet.

It was the antithesis of the rest of the condo, and not just because it’s designed to serve men and their desires for liquor, football, and cigars. It’s just overly staid in my opinion.

“Holy shit,” I murmur as I follow Maddox in. “I had no clue this was even here.”

He plops down in the middle of the couch, then reaches for a remote control. “I brought over my PS4. I thought you and I could practice our battle skills in a more chilled sort of way.”

I snort as I take in the handheld gaming controls, the only reason that I recognize them is that Myles is a big gamer. He waves one at me provocatively and then nods to the cushion beside him.

“Come on, Finley,” he urges with a gleam in his eye. “Take a load off for a while and come spend just half an hour with me blowing shit up.”

Playing video games just isn’t my thing, but it’s better than sitting around and letting my mind become overwhelmed with planning, contingencies, and what-ifs. It would actually do me good just to take a brain break.

“Okay,” I reply almost giddily, moving to the couch and hopping the back of it to land on the cushion beside Maddox. He hands me a controller and says, “We’ll play Final Fantasy VII. You’ll love it.”

I wait as he boots up the game, studying the controller. I assume he’ll give me a lesson on what the buttons do.

“Does Carrick even come in here?” I ask as I kick my tennis shoes off and cross my legs.

“He used to PF,” Maddox says as the game starts to load.

“PF?”

“Pre-Finley.” He grins at me, then takes the controller I’m holding out of my hand. “But only to have a drink, conduct business, or maybe play some poker with friends.”

“But Carrick doesn’t have friends,” I point out. “And why hasn’t he come in here since I came into his life?”

“You are correct… Carrick doesn’t have friends. Maybe I should have said business acquaintances. And I imagine he doesn’t use this room very much these days as he hasn’t had much downtime since you came into his life wreaking havoc.”

I know he’s teasing, so I bump my shoulder against his good naturedly. “Well, maybe I can convince him to play a few games of pool. I’m really good, and I’m not above hustling him.”

“It’s a good thing I’m not a sucker then,” Carrick’s voice sounds from behind us. Maddox and I both twist to look at the door to find Carrick standing there casually, one arm raised and his hand resting against the jamb slightly above his head. The smile on his face is amused.

“You’re back,” I exclaim, pushing up from the couch. I was looking forward to unwinding a little with Maddox, but if it’s a choice between time with him or Carrick, I’m going to choose Carrick every time.

It seems just so natural, despite the fact I know Maddox is watching, to walk right up to Carrick and kiss him.

Or perhaps it’s him who is kissing me.

Regardless, my lips are happy for that brief connection, and I take stock of the fact I’m infinitely happier at this moment than I was a mere thirty seconds ago hanging out with Maddox, and I was pretty damn happy then.

There’s no getting around it.

Carrick just does it for me in all ways.

Excerpt

We go at it for almost half an hour, working in four-minute fast rounds with one-minute breathers in between. Of course, that’s for my benefit, not Carrick’s, who doesn’t get out of breath at all. In fact, he hasn’t even broken a sweat while I’m covered in it.

“Last round,” Carrick says as he presses the button on his watch to reset the timer. I’m still a little wheezy, bent over with my hands on my knees, but I give a resolute nod.

We start again, my arms and legs feeling heavy and weighed down from the prior rounds we’d completed. I spend a little too much time putting space between us, walking in a circle to keep him at my front.

He doesn’t like me taking this extra breather when I just had one, and he comes at me. He volleys several punches, which I’m able to parry only because he’s slowed them down even more in deference to my frail human body being nearly depleted of energy.

An inside-out parry misses his punch and would have connected with my nose had Carrick not pulled it at the last minute.

“Come on, Finley,” he growls. “If you’re fighting a daemon or fae, they’re not going to go easy on you like this. Give me more.”

I go on the offensive, hit him with a one-two, and manage to block a roundhouse punch from him. But I don’t merely block it, I wrap my arm around his, pin it hard to my side, and step into him to give three hard uppercuts to his stomach that’s seemingly made of steel, and I can feel my knuckles bruising.

Carrick easily pulls free, puts his hand on top of my head, and pushes me backward like I’m an annoying kid throwing a tantrum.

It’s humiliating—even more so when he lectures me. “That was pretty pathetic. Come on now. Pull deep.”

Christ, I’m tired, but anger fires my blood up and I get a burst of energy I didn’t expect. I take advantage of it while he’s standing complacently and attack. Except this time, I feign high and then take a page from Titus’ book and crouch low. One foot planted hard on the floor, the other leg extended, I make a twirl like a top and sweep Carrick’s leg out from under him.

He goes down and I start to pop up, intent on bringing my knee down onto his chest and putting an elbow to the bridge of his nose, and then I can see if demi-gods bleed black or red.

But Carrick isn’t about to let me attack him further. His arm shoots out as he falls to the floor, hooks around my thigh, and brings me crashing down with him.

Carrick to his back.

Me coming straight down on top of him, in what might be a bizarre twist of fate, has me perfectly aligned on top of his body. My torso to his torso and my face hovering right above his, my hands on his chest, his on my hips.

I’m breathing hard, not just from the physical exertion but from the fact I’m lying on top of Carrick.

Weirdly, Carrick’s chest is moving a bit more rapidly than his placid, under-exerted self was just moments ago.

And those honeyed eyes of his… glowing again. I know now it’s not a trick of the light, but something otherworldly in him that tells me he’s feeling strong emotion.

There’s no rational thinking or pre-planned speech. I react from my gut and my heart as I advise him in the barest of a whisper. “I’m going to kiss you, and if you don’t want it, you better throw me off now.”

Not a muscle twitches on Carrick’s face so I can read what he might be thinking, but a red haze starts to overtake his pupils. I have no clue what that even means, but the gold in his eyes is still gleaming bright, and the fact he hasn’t thrown me off spurs me on.

I bend my head, tilting it slightly, and press my lips against his as my eyes start to flutter closed.

At first, nothing happens. I don’t feel a thrill of pleasure, and his lips stay firmly locked tight. A flicker of doubt hits me, and I even consider pulling away.

But then a low rumble of a growl emits from Carrick’s chest, and I find myself rolled off his body as he changes our places, coming to rest right on top of me. His hand goes behind my head so it doesn’t hit the hard gym floor.

I get just a flash of Carrick’s eyes, and he doesn’t hold back a single thing that’s running through that gorgeous head of his. He lays it all right out in his expression.

Lust, anger, possessiveness, and even regret.

It’s the lust that wins out because Carrick doesn’t just kiss me. No, he takes my mouth and brands it as his. He kisses me hard and deep, and I become a riot of feelings. My head spins because I never knew a kiss could be like this. Perfectly domineering and yet gentle at the same time, the glide of his tongue on mine is the best thing I’ve ever felt in my life. It’s the first taste of an addictive drug, and I know I’ll never in my lifetime get enough.

I’m not embarrassed by the moan that slips free of my mouth and fills his, nor how my hips try to rise upward to touch him.

Which is a mistake because the minute the soft center between my legs presses against the extremely hard, long, and thick ridge between his, Carrick rears back from me like he’s been electrocuted.

I cry out in despair when his mouth leaves mine, and my heart is crushed as I see his eyes darken and go flat.

“Fuck,” he mutters as he rises fluidly to his feet.

I scramble to mine, needing to be on equal footing and braced for the lecture I know I’m going to get.

“We can’t go there, Finley,” he says hoarsely, raking his fingers through his hair in agitation as his hard eyes pin on me.

EXCERPT

“Are you ready?” Farrah says, coming from behind me and massaging my shoulders. I move my head side to side while we both hop up and down. “Did you do those finger exercises I told you about?”

I flex my fingers and nod. “Yup, all warmed up.”

“Do you have your game face on?” Farrah spins me around and grips my shoulders as I mean mug it at her. “Ooo, you’ve been practicing in the mirror. I can tell.”

“When I brush my teeth. I really feel like I’ve mastered the scowl.”

“Honey, you mastered the scowl years ago. Now you’re just coming into your own with it.” She holds up her hands, and I start boxing into them as we leap around the apartment. “Quick on your feet, quick on your feet.” Farrah swings her hand at me, and I duck. “Focus, hone your attention.”

“Focused.”

“Tell me, who’s going to kill it today?”

“I am.” I bob back and forth and then give Farrah a one-two punch to her hands.

“Who’s going to do anything necessary, even sit on someone’s face if you need to, in order to win today’s challenge?”

“I am. Show no mercy. My ass is coming for your face.”

Farrah pauses, winces. “I’m not sure I like that.”

“Just go with it.”

“Okay, Luna’s ass is coming for your face.” She shrugs. “Next week let’s work on your trash talk.”

“Might be necessary.”

Circling again, I box at Farrah’s hands, feeling light on my feet and ready for anything that comes my way. “You’re going to ignore all conversations from Mr. Snobby Shoes.”

“I don’t even know he exists.”

“Your eyes are on the prize. And what is that prize?”

“Giving Cohen and Declan the best wedding possible.”

“Exactly.” She lowers her palms. “Quick, flash me your hands.”

I lift my hands, and she inspects them carefully.

“You lotioned—good. Nails are clipped to a perfect length, and those fingers are stretched and strong. Rotate your wrists for me.” She lowers her ear to my wrists as I circle them around. “Perfect, no cracking, no tension.” She points to the ground. “Fast feet.”

My feet start bouncing up and down, like in those football movies, and I hold my hands at my hips, ready for the call . . .

“Draw!” Farrah shouts.

I pull my glue gun from my hip and point it at her. “You’ve been glued.”

Farrah claps her hands. “Reaction time was spot on. You’re ready.”

“Yeah?”

She nods. “You got this, girl. This competition is yours for the taking. And remember what we talked about: don’t focus on what you think will win . . .”

“Focus on what will bring Cohen and Declan joy.”

The Crush by Penelope Ward ~ Excerpt Reveal

Title: The Crush
Author: Penelope Ward
Genre: Standalone Contemporary Romance
Release Date: February 22, 2021

BLURB

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone, second-chance story of forbidden love…

It’s natural to want the one you can’t have. And for as long as I could remember, I’d secretly wanted my brother’s best friend, Jace.

He was six years older and always treated me like the sister he never had.

Fast forward a decade.

We were all in our twenties now. Jace had moved in with my brother, Nathan, and me to help us make ends meet after our parents died.

It was just the three of us—an odd family dynamic.

Living under our roof, Jace was as bossy and protective as ever.

But he certainly didn’t look at me like a sister anymore. That was what made things so complicated.

I was pretty much hot and bothered twenty-four-seven.

And he was torn.

The signs were subtle, at first. Like on movie night, I’d casually rest my leg against his, and he wouldn’t exactly shift away.

Still, I assumed he would never…go there.

Nathan would kill us.

The knowledge of that wasn’t enough to stop the inevitable, though.

Eventually our slow burn exploded.

But more than the physical attraction, we’d developed a strong connection.

We just couldn’t get caught, right?

That sounded simple.

Until it wasn’t.

This is a story of forbidden love, broken trust, and an unexpected second chance.

EXCERPT

“I’m gonna grab a beer,” he said. “You want something?”

“I’ll take a beer, too.”

He chuckled. “Is it bad that I had to think for a second whether you’re legal to drink? It feels wrong giving you alcohol, for some reason.”

“You’ve dropped me off at the damn bar! How could you think that?”

“I know. It’s fucked-up.” He laughed as he walked backwards into the house. “Be right back.”

A minute later, Jace returned with two chilled bottles of Miller Lite. He popped one open and handed it to me.

“Thanks.” I took a long sip that felt great going down.

We polished off the rest of the food, and by the time I finished the beer, I felt pretty tipsy. Between the soft breeze blowing Jace’s scent my way and the buzz, I was on cloud nine.

Jace took it upon himself to clear our wrappers and napkins, stuffing everything into the paper bag. As he went back into the kitchen, he asked, “Want another beer?”

“I’d love one.”

When he returned, he set the bottle in front of me and sat back down. He put his feet up on an empty chair and leaned his head back, closing his eyes.

He sighed. “This is exactly what I needed…to chill at home.”

That made me happy. “Give your head a break tonight. You can always worry about work tomorrow.”

“Yeah. I think I’m gonna take your advice on that.”

While his eyes were closed, I was able to enjoy staring at his profile—his strong, angular jaw and slightly cleft chin, his perfect nose and kissable lips, the way the sun brought out a reddish tone in his otherwise black hair. Jace was even more beautiful with the sun shining on him.

I eventually closed my eyes as well, enjoying the breeze that offset a little of the heat. My eyes opened suddenly when I heard his chair skid against the cement.

“Fuck it.” He got up. “I’ll be right back.”

My heart raced a little. What is he doing?

A few minutes later, Jace returned in his swim trunks. They were blue with tiny anchors, a nautical pattern. Not that I was looking closely at his lower half or anything. I’d just started to make my way up to his chest when he dove into the pool, his gorgeous, hard body disappearing under the sky blue water.

He emerged and shook his head to clear the water from his hair. “You comin’ in or what?”

I got goose bumps. I hadn’t planned to, but I couldn’t resist the invitation.

“Sure.” I got up from my seat and unwrapped the towel.

Jace watched as I entered the pool. But what was he thinking?

I dove in and swam toward him, feeling more comfortable in my bathing suit now that I was submerged in the water.

He flashed a mischievous grin. “Wanna race?”

I splashed him. “Why? You think you can beat me just cuz your legs are longer?”

He cocked a brow. “There’s only one way to find out, right?”

Over the next several minutes, Jace and I swam in tandem from one end of the pool to the other. Sometimes he’d beat me to the other side, and a few times, I beat him.

Eventually, we got into a water fight. The next thing I knew, he was chasing me, then lifting me up and tossing me in the water. He did that several times. It was the most fun I’d had in a long time. I hadn’t a care in the world.

Then he lifted me up again, and I was certain he was going to toss me into the water, just like all of the other times. Instead, though, he just held me. Our eyes locked as my legs wrapped around his waist. He was going to have to drop me, because I sure as hell wasn’t climbing off him willingly. As he continued to hold me, the world seemed to stop. I could see the reflection of the palm trees in his gorgeous eyes, made luminescent by the sun. Those eyes then dropped to my lips. I could see his chest rising and falling. He swallowed hard. Holy shit. Something was happening. My heart was going a mile a minute.

And then…

“What are you doing?”

Jace dropped me like a hot potato at the sound of Nathan’s voice. My body hit the water with a loud splash.

What the hell is he doing here? My voice was shaky as I wiped the water from my eyes. “Wha…why are you home? I thought you were driving to meet that girl.”

“She canceled on me, so I came back after the job interview.” Nathan’s eyes traveled between Jace and me. He seemed suspicious.

“Oh.” I exhaled, moving a strand of hair out of my mouth. “How…how did the interview go?”

“It was okay. Too hard to tell if they’re gonna call me back, though.” He looked straight at Jace. “You guys seemed to be having fun. Didn’t realize I was missing out on a…pool party.”

Jace was silent.

I felt the need to chime in. “Jace decided to take his debut dip in the pool. We were just playing around.”

Nathan looked between us again. “I see.”

Jace finally spoke. “Well, it’s hot as all hell today. So…”

“You guys down if I make some dinner?” Nathan finally asked.

“We actually already ate,” I told him. “Jace went to Checkers.”

Nathan turned to his friend. “Since when do you eat dinner this early?”

Jace cleared his throat. “I was starving.”

“We didn’t think you were going to be home,” I said. “Otherwise, we would’ve waited.”

“I guess I’ll give you that.”

Jace got out of the water and dried himself off. He then laid out on one of the loungers, displaying his gorgeous, tanned body in all of its glistening glory. His feet dangled off the end of the chair.

Nathan snapped his fingers in front of my face. “I asked if I got anything in the mail. Earth to Farrah.”

Jesus. I hadn’t even heard him the first time.

Rules. Order. Control.
Serve and protect.
Becoming a cop gave my life the structure I so desperately craved, and the power I needed to move forward.
But being the daughter and sister of cops landed me squarely in the coddle with kid gloves category.
Except in the case of Vance Brody.
Aspen Falls PD’s most revered detective was also its most unpredictable.
Brody didn’t play by the rules. Not the department’s. And certainly not mine.

Vance

Everybody breaks the rules. Nobody is in control. Chaos reigns.
That was my philosophy, and it was up to me to make sure the job got done in spite of it all.
