Rainer Torrence is everything I could have wanted in my life and more.
He became my best friend when I was Thirteen years old.
From then on, we were inseparable. He was my first love and my first heartbreak.
But I always thought it was forever.
Until his Father died and things went bad.
Then suddenly, he disappeared.
Ten years and I didn’t see or hear from him.
Then came the call I’d be praying for– he was back in town.
Only the man I remembered is not him.
This man is quiet, deadly, and so incredibly beautiful.
He also doesn’t remember me.
He looks into my eyes, and he sees nothing.
So, I let him believe I’m just a girl that walked into his bar.
I let him believe I’m just a friend.
I let him use me on the cold, dark nights.
I let him believe that I am as emotionless about our relationship as he is.
I just let the secret go on and on.
But all secrets have an end, don’t they?

Emalie and Rainer were the total opposites in High School, he was the sexy bad boy all the girls wanted to tame and she was the quite tomboy who would rather rock a baggy sweatshirt and her signature Chucks.
“We’re polar opposites. He’s handsome and the most popular boy in school. I’m a complete tomboy.
We’re the most unlikely duo but it works for us.”
Even though they are polar opposites they are the best of friends. Like inseparable and they have this amazing bond, I loved how they were with each other. Rainer has always treated her like a little sister but Emalie or Emy as Rainer calls her starts to develop feeling towards him but she thinks he will always see her as nothing more then they already are. That is until one night, when one kiss changes everything.
“You’re fucking beautiful. Right here, right now, you’re breathtaking. I should have told you that.”
I am a huge sucker for friends to lover’s stories and was so happy that these two were finally opening up about how they felt. I was glued to the pages, but then tragedy strikes. Rainer starts backing away and he tells Emy it’s to protect her. But protect her from what? He won’t tell her and then all of the sudden he is gone.
“I want to be with you more then my next breath, but I have to protect you, too.”
A little over 10 years later Emy hears he is back in town and she is desperate to see the boy who still till this day owns a piece of her heart. There are so many unanswered questions, like where the hell did Rainer go and why in all that time did he never contact her? When she walks into the bar he owns and sees him he is no longer the boy she knew, the best friend she loved but a sexy, mysterious man that has no idea who she is. He doesn’t recognize her and Emy is crushed, hell I am crushed. All those years she loved him and the friendship they shared that grew into love and he forgot her?
“Things have happened and the memories aren’t what they should be, but I know she mattered to me, at the time, more then anyone in my world.”
Even though he doesn’t remember her Emi and Rainer start to hang out together, well hang out as in fuck each others brains out. Rainer doesn’t do relationships but Emy will take him any way she can get him and keeps telling herself she is going to tell him the truth, who she really is. We soon learn there is a good reason that Rainer has no idea who she is but we also learn he is in love with someone else. That someone else is Pippa and they have this connection that breaks Emy’s heart. She has loved him for so many years, should she just let him go? What happens when the truth comes out and Rainer finally remembers his Emy?
“You owned my heart first Emalie.”
Ok I really liked this book a lot but there are some parts of this story that I just had a hard time with. When we find out where Rainer was for all those years away from Emy it is someplace I would have never guessed in a million years but it’s also where I had a bit of a problem with the story. So yeah it’s all crazy and fucked up what happened to him and I understand that him and Pippa have their connection because they both experienced the same horrible thing but I was all like wth?! I felt like the author was like here you go let me drop this crazy bomb on you but we won’t go into to much detail. Plus all the times Rainer pushed Emy to the side even after he remembered her to protect or be with Pippa because up until almost the end of the book he loved her. Well what about poor Emy? I just felt like there should have been more then what we got. Maybe I am also just a tad bit annoyed because I loved Emy and kind of didn’t really appreciate Pippa. I mean back off you have your own man. It sort of felt at times like Emy was Rainer’s second choice, like a damn consolation prize and I hated that. She deserved to be treated better then that. Then towards the end the Author did wrap things up nicely for them and I am glad they got their HEA they deserved. Overall I really did enjoy this book and look forward to reading more from this Author.
