The boy who always felt like mine is now the man I can’t have…

Dig a little and you’ll find photos of me in the bathtub with Ezra Stern.
Get your mind out of the gutter. We were six months old.
Pry and one of us might confess we saved our first kiss for each other.
The most clumsy, wet, sloppy . . . spectacular thirty seconds of my adolescence.
Get into our business and you’ll see two families, closer than blood, torn apart in an instant.
Twenty years later, my “awkward duckling” best friend from childhood,
the boy no one noticed, is a man no one can ignore.

Finer. Fiercer. Smarter.

Tell me it’s wrong.
Tell me the boy who always felt like mine is now the man I can’t have.
When we find each other again, everything stands in our way–secrets, lies, promises.
But we didn’t come this far to give up now.
And I know just the move to make if I want to make him mine.

I am a fan of Kennedy Ryan and that was the reason I chose to review this book. Plus the blurb looked interesting but this book was all over the place for me. Ezra and Kimba are friends since they were babies. They could not be closer unless they were actually related. They share so many things together growing up including their first kiss. Their connection was so strong and I knew how deep their feelings for each other ran even at such a young age.

For reasons unknown, their parents who are also very close have a falling out and Ezra and his parents move away quickly. Time goes on and the two star crossed kids lose touch. Up until this point I was liking this book a lot. I saw where it was going…a HOT reunion!!! But as it flashes forward to present and their paths cross again. Sadly the book and storyline lost me.

Kimba has a job in the political arena and for ME, it was just too much political lingo and took away from the storyline. Especially with what is going on in today’s world, the last thing I want to read about is politics. Also the whole race/religion storyline was too much for me as well. I wanted a love story but not something that was so laced with a race/religion storyline. It was again too much for my personal preference. Lastly, the whole ex thing Ezra has going on with his baby momma was just a head shaking scenario as well. It was just so out of place and I found it far fetched and unbelievable. The mixture of these three things just took too much away from the start of such a great love story. I wanted to see more of their reconnection. Perhaps other people will enjoy the political and current events slant. I was hoping for an escape from reality. Hopefully others will love it.

“You’re fucking brilliant.”

“Huh?” Ezra asks absentmindedly, paying more attention to the flame under his pan than to my compliment. “What’d you say?”

“I said you’re brilliant.” I hold up the iPad I’m using to read his manuscript. “Your book, the YLA story, is incredible, Ez.”

“Oh. Thanks.” He flashes me a smile and then goes back to his French toast. “The key to getting this right is the milk-to-bread ratio.”

I hop off the counter and walk over to stand beside him at the stove. “Would you forget about your French toast for a minute and listen to me?”

“But it’s stuffed French toast.” He takes the pan off the burner and pulls me into his arms. “And I could listen to you all day. What were you saying? Something about me being a handsome, sexy genius?”

“Um…those weren’t my exact words.” I laugh up at him.

“I could have sworn that’s what you said, and I’m never wrong.” He slides his hands over my ass in a pair of his boxer shorts. “Some even say I’m fucking brilliant.”

“They probably just like your big dick,” I whisper and blink up at him as innocently as I can manage.

“I get that a lot.” He drops a kiss on my head and turns back to his French toast. I lean down to rest an elbow on the counter and watch him work.

“A lot?” I ask teasingly. “Have there been a lot?”

He pauses mid-toast-flip and slants me a glance. “Are you asking how many people I’ve had sex with?”

“I mean, it’s none of my business. If you don’t want to—”

Lord above, only eight?!

“Oh.” I straighten and rest my hip against the counter. “What a, um, single-digit number that is.”

“What about you?”

What about me? I’m tabulating years of hook-ups, one-night stands, fuck bois and carrying the one.

“If you don’t want to,” he says, cracking an egg into a bowl, “it’s fine. I don’t care how many people—”

“I don’t know.”

He glances up from whisking eggs, a small frown puckering his dark brows. “You don’t know what?”

“My number. I don’t know how many people I’ve been with.”

He resumes whisking, his frown clearing. “Oh.”

The whisking eggs and whirring refrigerator are the only sounds in the kitchen. I’ve never been embarrassed by my choices. I enjoy sex. I’ve had it with a lot of people. People I really liked…or tolerated…but didn’t want to commit to. I’ve always been safe and never mean about it. I was upfront, and when someone wanted more, I let them know “more” wasn’t an option.

“I just never…” I cross my arms over my stomach, fold one bare foot over the other. “I haven’t been interested in committed relationships. There hasn’t been anyone I wanted that with.”

“Tru.” He stops whisking and gives me the full impact of his undivided attention. His eyes are placid blue. No shadows or undercurrents. “I don’t care.” Ezra pushes the bowl aside and faces me. “But there is something I feel like we should be clear on regarding how you’ve handled sex in the past.”

Here we go.

“You’ve never wanted to commit before,” he says.

“Right. I’ve never wanted any strings attached.”

“I know I said we could be just sex, no emotional attachments.” He shoves his hands in his pockets. “But I feel like I have to be honest with you. Having you back in my life has been…it’s been exactly what I need, and what I felt last night… I’ve never felt that way before.”

I’m not even sure my heart is beating, but it also feels like there’s a tumult in my chest. “What are you saying, Ez?”

His mouth flattens into a hard line and his jaw hardens to stone. “I want strings.”

“Y-you do?”

“I want strings.” He links our fingers, strokes his thumb across my palm. “Ropes, if necessary. I want anything that keeps you with me and me with you and tells everyone else don’t even think about it.”

I’m stunned and incredibly turned on, but that doesn’t take much where Ezra’s concerned.

“You…you do?” I ask faintly…again.

“I wouldn’t do well sharing you.”

I’d spent my life as a plaything. A toy to be used by powerful and deadly men in whatever way they pleased. So I was just as surprised as anyone else that I had feelings left. Feelings that lead me to fight for true love while damning myself.

And that’s just where this story begins.

Desperate and alone I turned back to my childhood home. The first wicked place I’d known with the darkest villain among them. My stepfather. But I could weather his storm in exchange for safety. I had to.

What I didn’t expect to find was Niall McDonough. The only man I’d ever really loved had reappeared only to become one of them. Someone ruthless and cruel. He wants to ruin me. As my stepfather’s savage soldier he might just do it.

But then again, twelve years ago a fortune teller predicted I’d need just such a soldier to save both my heart and soul.

Ok, so I don’t want to really give too much away. I think this book was a unique read. I will say the first few pages I was a little confused but was glad I forged forward. This is a dark read and had me re-reading a few times because I was thinking…”did I just read that”.

Niall and Drea have a past when they were younger so in love. Due to unfortunate circumstances they broke up and have led extremely dark lives separately and Niall hates Drea now. Not 100% but close. She has been a literal sex slave and he is just evil. Their paths cross and Niall welcomes it because he is watching her get payback. But can he really watch? Do old feelings start to surface and break the walls he has so carefully built. Can he watch her be raped and tortured and passed around?

Drea’s feelings for Niall have never gone away. She thought breaking his heart was saving him and giving him a chance at a normal life. What she didn’t expect was he would choose a dark, lonely life for an enemy of hers.

Watching these two rehash old memories and the truth come to light was emotional and some scenes were just brutal. This was a standalone and I will definitely be reading the other books in this series.

“My, my, this is interesting. Perhaps Deirdre is an appropriate name after all.”

“What the shit is going on here?” My mind was clearing. Sort of.

“I’m reading your future, darling. Your dismal and sorrowful future.”

I felt like I’d been hit. Hard. And I knew what it was like to be punched, slapped, kicked… I tried to shake off the list.

“What does it say?” My words were shaky, no matter how I tried to steady them.

“You will cause much unrest in this little corner of the world.”

The hair on the back of my neck stood up. No, was on the tip of my tongue. My mom had gotten me out of a life of mobsters and murderers. I wasn’t an Ulster anymore. I wouldn’t be. I was just another teenaged girl wondering about her future.

“Rivers of blood. Chaos and pain. Betrayal all at your hand,” she mused in partial phrases. “You will need a soldier at your side if you wish to be free of it all.”

“A soldier?” I swallowed, sorrow swelling in my heart.

“Someone to wage war. Someone ruthless and brutal and savage.” She arched her eyebrow. “If you don’t find him, you both end up dead. Just like the legend.”

I rolled my eyes with a wild grunt and shoved up from the table. “Convenient legend,” I snarked under my breath.

“Heed my words or don’t, it makes no matter to me. It’s your fate and your fate alone that you have to face.” She shrugged before unwinding to stand. Incense swirled around her again as she walked toward the back corner of the room.

I shoved up from the stupid pillows on the stupid floor of the stupid Irish gypsy and started to stomp off.

“Today, lightning will strike, Deirdre of the sorrows.” Her voice seemed far away, too far away. “Take that as a sign of what’s been set in motion.”

This was a great read!! A great storyline, well written and super likeable characters. Cohen is a young, hot, single dad and half owner of a very popular bar. His ex left him right after their son was born and signed over all her rights and ran away with another man. To say Cohen has bitter feelings for her and her family is an understatement. He loathes them all…maybe.

When his son takes ill and has to be rushed to the emergency room, he is taken back to see his doctor. Jamie, the doctor, is his ex’s sister. He has not allowed anyone from his ex’s family to see or be part of his young son’s life. However, he has a soft spot for Jamie and always has. He has always had an attraction to her, but she was young and his girlfriend’s little sister. But on more than one occasion has he had the thought “what if I picked the other sister”.

Jamie, is a young successful ER doctor and there’s no love lost for her evil sister. She has a soft spot for Cohen…always had a crush on him. Now that she sees her nephew, her heart melts. It kicks off when she asks to be part of his life and Cohen has a tough decision to make.

It was so much fun watching these two deal with old, new feelings and a cute little five year old that draws them all together. Of course, there are a few bumps in the road that had me on the edge of my seat but I’ll keep those to myself. It is well written and I couldn’t put it down until I was done. I definitely look forward to any future books in this series.

Chapter One

Jamie Five Years Later

Nine hours down.

Three to go. Three hours until I can go home, finish that box of Thin Mints I shouldn’t have bought, and binge-watch a show on Netflix.

Netflix and cookies. Netflix and single. Netflix and story of my life. “Tell me he finally agreed?” Lauren, our charge nurse, asks—referring to the appendicitis patient who’s been refusing an appendectomy all night.

I nod. “After his wife promised to buy him a new TV.” She scoffs. “I’d love to say someone being bribed to have life-saving surgery is a shocker, but after working in the ER for so long, I’m not easily shooketh.”

“Tell me about it.” I glance around the emergency room. “What’s next for me?” It’s been a slow night at Anchor Ridge Memorial Hospital, and as much as that’s a good thing, it can get boring.

She points down the hall. “Exam room three. Five-year-old with a fever.” Her tone turns bubbly as she wiggles her shoulders. “Dad is super hot, by the way.”

I shake my head and tap my knuckles against the triage desk. “I’ll let you know if I need anything.” “Ask him for his number,” she half-whispers with a thumbs-up. I roll my eyes and dismissively wave my hand. “Absolutely not.” “All work and no play makes Jamie a grumpy doctor.” “Yeah, yeah, yeah.” I spin on my heel and walk to the room. The door is cracked, and I knock, snatching a pair of latex gloves on my way in. “Hello, I’m Dr.—” I stop, stumble back two steps, and cover my mouth with my hand. Holy crap. My body tenses, and as soon as my gaze meets his, his jaw flexes.

I struggle for words as anger and disgust line his face. Words I’d planned if this moment ever happened. Unfortunately, those words become a scared bitch and run away. “Cohen,” is all I manage in a whisper. He stands tall from his chair, his narrowed eyes pinned to me, and moves to the side of the bed, blocking my view of the patient.

Lauren’s words hit me. “Five-year-old …” My attention slides from Sir Pissed Off, and I shift to the left. “Oh my God,” I whisper, gaping at the little boy in the bed. A little boy whose eyes are sleepy and nose is red and irritated. Those sleepy eyes, a walnut-brown with a slight slant, match his father’s. The same with his thick ash-brown hair. But the dimple in his chin and heart-shaped face match hers. “Is this …?” My hand shakes when I point at him. It’s a dumb question. Even if he says no, he’ll be a liar. “What are you doing here?” he repeats, his tone harsh. If I wasn’t at a loss for words, my smart-ass self would throw out something along the lines of, What do you think, dumbass? I’m sporting a doctor’s jacket with my name embroidered on it.

But I don’t. Because I can’t. It’s a challenge, wrapping my head around them being here, let alone dragging out my sarcasm. “I’m your doctor,” I finally say before signaling to the boy. “I’m his doctor.” Sound cool. Confident. You’re the fucking professional here, Jamie. “We want a different doctor,” he hisses, his voice low enough so only I can hear. “I’m the only doctor on shift tonight.” I’m speaking to Cohen, but the boy holds my interest. He’s watching this exchange, his eyes pinging back and forth between his father and me with curiosity on his tired face.

“We’ll go to another hospital then.” “Why, Dad?” the boy whines, sniffling. “I don’t feel good, and what if I puke in the car?” “I want another doctor.” His broad shoulders draw back. He raises a brow when I hold up a finger, turn, and scurry out of the room. I rush over to Lauren. “Can you watch the boy in three for a minute? I need to talk to his father privately.”

She peeks up at me from her computer and tilts her head to the side. “Yeah … sure.” Cohen is pacing the room when we walk in. “A word,” I say, jerking my head toward the doorway. Cohen’s attention darts to the boy, and he delivers a gentle smile. “I’ll be right back, buddy.” He gives him a quick peck on the head and swings his arm toward the door, his eyes cold. “After you, Your Highness.”

Lauren throws me a curious glance when he walks past her, and I shrug as if this isn’t about to be awkward city up in here.

As we leave, I hear Lauren asking the boy what his favorite cartoon is. Cohen keeps his distance while I lead us into a private room, the one reserved for breaking bad news to families.

I speak as soon as I shut the door., “Cohen—”

Too bad he doesn’t let me get more than his name out. Rude. His deep-set eyes level on me. “This is a conflict of interest, Jamie. The nurse can help us. We don’t need you.”

“We don’t need you.” The memories of the last time he said those words to me smack into me like a headache. It was the last time I saw him. The last time he looked at me with the same resentment. Either he doesn’t realize how hard his insult hit me or he doesn’t care. I snort, anger biting at me. “What do you think I’m going to do, huh? Kidnap him?” “Considering who you’re related to, who knows?” “Wow.” I clench my fists to hold myself back from smacking him in the face since his words are like a slap in mine. “You have some nerve.”

It’d make for some bad headlines if a doctor slapped a patient’s father. There’s no apology on his face when he holds up his hands. “Just saying it how I see it.” “Then allow me to say it how I see it.” I thrust my finger toward the door. “You have a sick son in there, and it’s my job to treat him. Don’t like it? I don’t give a shit.” I shove past him, stalk out of the room, and don’t check to see if he’s following me.

“Everything okay?” Lauren asks, her eyes glancing over my shoulder, and I realize Cohen is behind me, still keeping his distance.

“Peachy,” I chirp before approaching the bed and smiling down at the boy. “What’s your name, honey?”

“Noah,” he croaks. Even though I was sure it was him, my head spins at his confirmation. I tenderly squeeze his arm, and my tone turns cheerful. “Hi, Noah. I’m Dr. Gentry. Can I ask some questions about how you’re feeling?”

He nods. Cohen stalks to the other side of the bed, his eyes on me, and Lauren migrates to the corner, her nosy ass interested in this shitshow.

“He has a fever,” Cohen tells me, his tone softer. “For how long?” He scratches his scruffy cheek. “Over twenty-four hours.” “Appetite?” He shakes his head. “Not even sugar. I can hardly get him to drink, and he has no energy, which is very rare for him.”

“Cough?” “Yes.” His jerk attitude settles while we turn our attention to Noah. I ask question after question as I take his temperature and go through all the motions.

“Symptoms tell me it’s the flu,” I say, removing my gloves and tossing them into the trash. “We’ll do a test, and I also want to run some blood work to make sure we’re not missing anything.”

Cohen nods. “Thank you.” I smile at Noah. “We’ll get you back to feeling good in no time.” I give Lauren, who’s gathering supplies for the test, a head nod and leave the room.

I‘ll definitely be pairing wine with those Thin Mints tonight. Lauren comes scurrying into the doctors’ lounge ten minutes later. “Whoa, what was that about? Dude was super nice to me but acted as if you’d pissed in his Cheerios.”

Here goes.

A chill sweeps up my neck. “That’s my sister’s ex … and her son … the ones she left.” “Oh, Jerry Springer.”

This was a great little read. And what I mean by little is, it was too short!! I wanted more!!! Austin is an ex football player, player with women and now an agent for athletes. There is definitely no shortage of women where he is concerned. When he signs up to donate a kidney to a family member, he knows he must get his office organized and hire a new assistant. He needs someone that can handle arrogant athletes and run things smoothly in his absence. Enter Quinn. She is a spitfire and he’s immediately attracted to her during her interview. Quinn has her own demons but that’s part of her storyline and don’t want to give it away.

Fast forward a year. A year of longing looks, shared stares and lots of cold showers. LOL. One night Austin returns from being out and finds a package on his door step. He immediately calls Quinn to come rescue him. While Quinn does come to the rescue, she has major reservations. She wants to give in to her feelings to Austin but now there are all sorts of complications.

I loved watching Austin struggle with his new dilemma and his actions are described so perfectly I could actually see in my head how it played out. It was hysterical. I also loved watching him start to want a family with Quinn. Are their feelings strong enough to start a relationship? Or will Quinn head for the hills? I absolutely loved these two and can’t wait to read more from this series!!!

The Rival Roomies by Piper Rayne ~ Release Blitz w/ 4 Star Review!

Release Date: May 12

I’ve loved him from afar.

Though most times he’s only a foot away.

I’m smart enough to know he’ll never be anyone’s forever.

He checks all the bad boy boxes. Tattoos. Check. Motorcycle. Check. Chip on his shoulder. Check check.

If he wasn’t my neighbor and friend I may have thrown myself at him. Okay, yeah. I wouldn’t. Because guys like Dylan don’t want a woman who writes kid’s math textbooks under him in bed. Instead, I pathetically savor morsels of moments where I have his sole attention.

That was until his archenemy moved in with me. Now suddenly, Dylan’s moving in too and warning off the first guy in a long time who’s showing me interest. Could he finally see me as more than a friend, or am I just a prize to win and show off to his enemy?

Rian is a math book writer and basically the “square” of her group of friends. She bakes, is sweet and wouldn’t hurt a fly. She also has a major crush on her good friend and now roommate Dylan. Dylan is a tattooed alpha that has his own shop and has recently moved in with Rian. There is another roommate Jax…and that’s part of the reason Dylan moved in with Rian. Jax is from Dylan’s past and that plays a big part of this story. Dylan knows Rian has feelings for him and it’s mutual. They are both hiding feelings until it’s too much and the fallout is cute to watch.

This is your standard friend to lovers romance except they live together. I wanted to love this book but for some reason I never got to love status. I was in “like” with it instead. Which isn’t a bad thing, I just never felt a romantic connection between Rian and Dylan but more of friendship. I like the previous books in this series and will read new ones but I wish I had felt more with this story. I’m sure some people will love it.

Release Date: May 12

This is for charity. This is for fun. You are a professional. You can do it.

Those are the words that Calloway Alvarez chants to herself as she watches all the large men gather into the small room where she’ll be doing the interviews for her employer—Hero Magazine.

Honestly, she’s convinced herself that she can’t accomplish the task at hand.

That is until she hears his voice, and her head turns to see him standing there.

Louis Spurlock. Greek god. SWAT officer. Keeper of her secrets. Ultimate fantasy. Man who will break her heart.
Louis Spurlock has been playing nice.

He’s been biding his time, giving Calloway the space she thinks she needs.

But then he sees her taking photos of his friends in all states of undress, talking to them all as if they’re best friends, and that little thread of control he’d been managing to hold onto unravels.

Let’s change it up, she says. And the moment the words are out of her mouth, he’s stripping to his skivvies, and throwing out a challenge while he’s at it.

Calloway won’t know what hit her when he’s through playing.

But he does know one thing for sure. When it ends, she’ll be his.

I swear, these books always get read in one sitting…you just can’t put them down!! The sexy scenes are hot, hot, hot and never disappoint! Calloway and Louis are 2nd generation characters and you should probably start at the beginning…you will not be disappointed at all!

Sooo…they dated as kids and were also the best of friends. Calloway was one of the guys as well. Only when Louis breaks up with her for his career and leaves, she puts up walls that are meant to never come down. She is mad at him and has never forgiven him for it BUT forgetting him is a different story. She has never managed to move on from her young first love.

Louis is swoonworthy…just a hot, alpha male with a sensitive side as well. He is back and has his sights set on winning Calloway back. This makes for some funny fight scenes, witty banter and smoking sexy scenes. I absolutely LOVED seeing all the usual characters and what they are up to as well as getting a possible glimpse at storylines we may see in the near future???

Watching Louis try to win Calloway back was pure lightheartedness and so much fun to read…and the hot scenes didn’t hurt!! Of course, there is a little side story thrown in and it worked great. Loved everything about this book and anxiously waiting for next one to come out!!! The KPD Swat is a great series and highly recommend them all!

He’s like literally the worst.

Oakley Davis is the star running back at our University, and the reason I’ve broken my vow to avoid the college party scene. Thanks to a mixup with my advisor, I’m now serving my Public Relations internship as a glorified babysitter to the party-hard football players.

Specifically, Oakley.

He’s impossible to manage. His Instagram is full of half-naked, drunk photos and he’d rather attend parties than practice. His brand needs some serious work, and when he’s not driving me insane, he’s sleeping his way through the entire female population.

But I’m determined. I have plans to graduate a semester early and nothing or no one will get in my way. I’m a Virgo, after all. Oakley Davis might be a privileged, cocky, football star, but I’m Amanda Matthews; and I’ll do whatever it takes to get my A.

I have to make sure I don’t end up falling in love with the idiot, first.

This was a solid little love story book. The characters were adorable and I loved seeing them get on each others nerves. There wasn’t any crazy, crazy sexy scenes and I wish it had had more…it was on the PG-13 side but nonetheless still good.

Amanda needs to do an internship in order to graduate early. Through a twist of fate, she gets assigned to Oakley. He is the football team’s star. I must admit I didn’t really like him too much at the start. He is wild, impulsive, does not care about anything but partying and women. He is an actual publicist nightmare. Amanda is not very thrilled with having to take the task of cleaning up his image but she is determined to do a good job and get a good recommendation. I will say that some of the scenes between them had me laughing out loud!!! Quite a few witty one liners!!!

Naturally, these two come from very different lives…or do they?? Amanda seems straight laced but she has some whopper secrets and little by little these two, dare I say, become friends? Well, friends who have the major hots for each other!! This was a great storyline but I just wish it had been a little bit hotter!! Oakley became a likable character for sure and I loved seeing them work out their issues!! Great beach read!!

I have always loved to read. In kindergarten, I was the weird kid sitting in the reading nook by myself instead of trying to get more snacks. I’m excited to be putting my own voice on the page and watching a story I helped create come to life. I still love to read, but I also really like snacks.

I grew up in Chicago but recently moved back to the Dallas area where I live with my husband and son.

I have my Bachelor of Science in Biology. I spent a year researching chimpanzees and gorillas while I was in Chicago and then I spent another two months on a chimpanzee sanctuary trying to convince headstrong chimps to cooperate. Pro tip – grapes are a pretty hot bargaining tool. They work wonders with my toddler too.
